Stress and Muscle Tension

Stress and muscle tension go together. You might not notice it until the end of the day, when your shoulders are up around your ears, your jaw is sore, and a headache is starting at the back of your head. Or you wake up already tired and achy, like you never really rested. At Hanson Chiropractic Center, we help your body let go of the tension it's been holding, and that often takes some of the weight off your whole day.

Where stress and muscle tension show up

When you're under pressure, your muscles tighten up to brace for it. That's normal for a short burst. But when stress hangs around for weeks, those muscles never fully relax.

Most people feel it in the same places: the tops of the shoulders, the back of the neck, the upper back between the shoulder blades, and the jaw. Tight neck muscles can lead to tension headaches. Clenching your teeth, often in your sleep, can leave your jaw sore in the morning. And sitting hunched at a desk while you're stressed makes all of it worse.

It works the other way, too. Living with a stiff neck or a back that aches all day is stressful in itself. Pain wears on your patience, your sleep, and your mood. Easing that pain and tension takes away one real source of stress, and a lot of people find everything else feels a little more manageable.

Worn out and achy

Stress and tension can leave you tired, too. Tight muscles take energy to hold, poor sleep piles on, and you end up feeling run down and achy most of the time.

If you've felt worn out for more than a few weeks, please see your doctor first. Ongoing fatigue can come from things like thyroid problems, low iron, sleep apnea, or depression, and those need medical care. Once your doctor has checked you out, we can help with the aches and stiffness that come along with being run down.

How we help with stress and muscle tension

We start by asking where you feel it, when it's worst, and what your days look like. Then we check how your neck, upper back, and shoulders move, look at your posture, and feel for the knots that have been building up.

Our massage therapist works on the tight muscles across your shoulders, neck, and back. When stiff joints are part of the problem, gentle chiropractic adjustments help them move freely again, with no quick twisting.

Easy ways to let go of tension during the day

Set a reminder to check your shoulders a few times a day. If they've crept up, drop them and take a slow breath. Unclench your jaw and let your tongue rest on the roof of your mouth. Get up from your desk every half hour, even for a minute. A short walk outside does a lot for both your mood and your muscles.

At night, give yourself a little time away from screens before bed, and try a warm shower to loosen up tight shoulders.

When to talk to someone

Muscle tension is something we can help with. Stress that feels overwhelming is something to talk about with your doctor or a counselor, too. The National Institute of Mental Health says that if stress or anxiety won't go away and gets in the way of your daily life, it's time to reach out for help.

If you're in crisis or thinking about hurting yourself, call or text 988 any time. For chest pain or trouble breathing, call 911.

Questions about stress and muscle tension

Can a chiropractor help with stress?

Yes, with the physical side of it. We help with what stress does to your body, like tight shoulders, a stiff neck, a sore jaw, and tension headaches, and with the aches that add to your stress in the first place. A lot of people tell us they feel more relaxed once those muscles let go. If stress or anxiety feels like too much, talk with your doctor or a counselor too. Results vary from person to person.

Is massage or an adjustment better for muscle tension?

It depends on what's going on. Tight muscles respond well to massage. Stiff joints that don't move well respond to gentle adjustments. Many people do best with both, and we'll tell you what we recommend after your exam.

Why am I so tired all the time?

There are a lot of possible reasons, from poor sleep to thyroid problems to low iron. If you've felt worn out for more than a few weeks, see your doctor first to rule those out. If aches and tension are part of the picture, we can help with that part.

Why does stress make my jaw hurt?

Many people clench their teeth when they're stressed, often without knowing it, sometimes in their sleep. That tires out the jaw muscles and can lead to headaches and neck tension. We check your jaw and neck together.

How often should I come in for tension?

That depends on how tight you are and how much stress you're under. Some people come in for a few weeks to get loosened up. Others like a regular visit during busy seasons. There's no long-term contract.
