Chiropractic Care for Nursing Moms and Babies in Edmond, OK

Nursing is hard on a mother's body. You sit in one position for long stretches, you lean over a tiny baby, and you do all of this at 2 am. So lots of new moms end up with achy shoulders, a tight neck, and a sore back. At Hanson Chiropractic Center, your postpartum chiropractor in Edmond, OK, we offer gentle care for postpartum aches and for babies who seem tense. We work alongside your lactation consultant and your baby's pediatrician.

Why nursing hurts your back and neck

Pregnancy and delivery change your posture and stretch your core and pelvis. Then a newborn arrives, and you spend hours hunched over feedings. Your head tips forward, your shoulders round, and your arms stay tired from holding your baby. A car seat and a diaper bag add to the load.

Many moms feel pain between the shoulder blades, at the base of the skull, or along the low back. Sore wrists show up too, from all the holding and lifting.

What a postpartum chiropractor offers moms

After your exam, our chiropractors explain what they found and which options fit. We use gentle chiropractic adjustments to restore movement in stiff joints, with no twisting and no forceful popping. Our massage therapist works on tight muscles in your neck, shoulders, and back. We also show you positions and pillow setups which take strain off your body during feeds. Care fits around your feeding schedule, and you're welcome to bring your baby along.

What about the baby?

Birth is a big event for a tiny body, and some newborns seem tense or favor one side. Our chiropractors are trained in gentle techniques for infants. They use light pressure, nothing like an adult adjustment, and they start with a careful exam and a look at your baby's history. You stay right beside your baby the whole time.

Many parents tell us their baby seems more comfortable after gentle care. Feeding trouble has many causes, though. A shallow latch, tongue or lip ties, low milk supply, and reflux all play a part, so a certified lactation consultant is the best first stop for those. We're glad to work as part of your team.

Comfortable positions for feeding

Bring your baby up to your breast with pillows rather than leaning down. Next, keep your back supported, and rest your feet on a stool. Switch positions between feeds, since a new angle gives tired muscles a break. Then roll your shoulders back and drop them every few minutes. We'll show you more at your visit.

Your first visit with a postpartum chiropractor

First, we ask about your delivery, your feeding routine, and where you hurt. Then we examine your neck, back, and posture. If your baby comes along, we ask about birth, feeding, and sleep before a gentle exam. Before you leave, we explain what we found and what we recommend. Fill out your new patient paperwork ahead of time, and meet the team on our team page.

When to call your baby's doctor or your own

Call your pediatrician right away if your baby has fewer wet diapers than usual, seems unusually sleepy and hard to wake for feeds, or isn't gaining weight. A fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher in a baby under three months needs immediate care. Call your own doctor or lactation consultant for a red, hot, painful area on your breast with fever or chills, or for pain which makes nursing impossible. Seek care right away for heavy bleeding, a severe headache, or chest pain after delivery.

Questions about seeing a postpartum chiropractor

Why does my back hurt so much while nursing?

Long stretches hunched over a baby strain the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Pregnancy and delivery also change your posture and weaken the core. Better positioning and pillow support help, and so does gentle care for stiff joints and tight muscles.

Is chiropractic care safe for a newborn?

Our chiropractors use gentle, light-touch methods made for babies, much lighter than an adult adjustment. We review your baby's birth and health history first, and we encourage you to keep your pediatrician in the loop.

Does chiropractic care help with breastfeeding?

We help moms with the back, neck, and shoulder pain nursing brings. Latch and supply problems have many causes, so a certified lactation consultant is the best first stop. We don't promise a fix for latching, and we're happy to work alongside your consultant.

When do I start care after delivery?

Ask your obstetrician or midwife when you're cleared for activity. Once you're cleared, call us. We adapt your care to how you're healing and keep visits comfortable and short.

Is my baby welcome at my appointment?

Yes. We'd rather see you comfortable than stressed about childcare. Read about related care for your neck and low back.
